The Perfect Family Vacation at Mukul, an Auberge Resort

We fell in love with the images Ranjana Armstrong, founder of Nugget (a new family guide and resource to family travel) was posting to her instagram on her recent trip to Mukul, and we had to learn more. We asked her why she selected Mukul as her Nicaraguan stay and how she felt about her experience while traveling with her husband and 11-month son. Find Ranjana's thoughts below.

"We picked Mukul based on a recommendation by Tropicsurf. We were looking for a tropical destination where we could stay walking distance to the beach that also allowed for surfing. With a little baby you only have so much time between naps, so we wanted to maximize the time together and not have to drive to the beach or to the surf. We loved everything about Mukul. First of, the staff was just wonderful. Everyone was so friendly and the people at the restaurant always tried to make our son laugh. They would even play with him while we ate. On our last night we wanted to eat in the private dining room, La Mesa, and we were allowed to bring our son. I have rarely experienced a high-end resort like Mukul where children were so welcome.

The villa we rented was also wonderful and the perfect home base for our little family. It was so spacious that our son could sleep in the entrance area without being disturbed by us. We enjoyed relaxing by our private pool while he napped and having a romantic dinner outside on the terrace without having to worry about needing a sitter. It was truly special and allowed us to fully relax without feeling trapped in our room while he slept.

Lastly, the beach at Mukul and the surrounding forrest are just magical. The beach is perfect for little kids that are still crawling, especially at low tide with all the tide pools that they can explore on their own. One of the reasons we chose Mukul was its natural, laid-back feel and the careful preservation of the environment. We didn’t get to go on any excursions outside the resort, but we enjoyed the ability to hike and experience nature and wildlife just outside our rooms. The turtle release in the evening was very special as were the guided nature walks in the evening and morning. Because of the time difference, our son would wake early in the morning at 5am. Normally this would have been upsetting, but instead we used the opportunity and we went on nature walks with one of your guides. We saw a lot of interesting animals and birds. One morning we were fortunate enough to witness a mother turtle returning to the ocean after laying her eggs. I will never forget that experience."
